The Bayside Built Environment Awards, Australia’s most prestigious municipal architecture awards have announced their 2016 winners. Now in their 11th year, the awards celebrate new architectural design in the Bayside area, recognising excellence across eight categories including Best New Building, Best Commercial Design and Best Ecologically Sustainable Design.

John Alkemade Architects has taken home the coveted award for Best New Building for their work at 5 Central Avenue Black Rock. The Black-Rock based architectural firm was praised for its choice of materials, such as a skillion roof, and a discreet scale of structure that sits with poise and sensitivity on the streetscape.

One of notable figures in this year’s awards was Tamara Dunkley from ADDARC, whose redevelopment of the old Beaumaris Hotel on Beach Road  was a finalist in four categories, and the recipient of 3 high commendations from the judging panel.

Heralded as a ‘home for the future’, Fine Line Design scooped the award for Best Ecologically Sustainable Design with their 22A Deauville Street property exceeding the standards of best practise in terms of not only materials used and energy efficiency but passive solar design and renewable energy use.

Meanwhile, taking home the gong for both Best Commercial Property and Most Creative Design was McKimm architects, whose 10 Newbay Street structure in Brighton impressed the judges with bold Brutalist overtones that bagged them the Creative Design prize.
