Remodern represents an exciting new generation of progressive international designers and is showcasing their collection in a space that exemplifies the Remodern aesthetic. The material quality, tactility and unique aesthetic of their collection and space can only be truly appreciated in person.

Directors Jennifer and Timothy Schilbach established Remodern with the belief that design should fulfil more than a utilitarian function, it should enhance and bring joy to the everyday. Later joined by architect Nic Gutierrez, they seek out modern, innovative and uncomplicated design with forms and materials that can be easily observed and understood. Their aesthetic has been described as ‘essential minimalism’, which reflects their respect for progressive designs that merges industrial materials, luxurious finishes and exceptional craftsmanship, simply and without complication. screenshot_6The showroom is located in a former industrial warehouse in Cheltenham, a traditionally industrial home to all types of makers and manufacturers, and more recently becoming a hub for the creative. Much time and thought went into finding the right space for the combined showroom-warehouse. “It needed to be spacious with an ‘old soul.’ A place where we could take advantage of the historic features, and they in turn would add authentic industrial charm and character,” Jen explains. When they first encountered the space, they could see beyond the industrial storage facility that it was. With its painted brick walls, continuous concrete floor, and full-span steel roof trusses more than five-metres high, the backdrop was set for the future of Remodern.

In creating the showroom, Remodern stayed true to the design principles they look for in the designers they represent, with honesty of form and materials and high-quality craft all featuring prominently in the showroom. Considered and purposeful elements such as metal racking and concrete block structures complement both the building and product collection, while timber walls frame spaces, providing warmth and definition. screenshot_4Arranged by brand, the showroom gives clarity to the unique expression of the designers Remodern represents. Furniture, lighting and accessories from emerging and established studios Bentu, Buzao, Sean Dix, m.a.d Furniture Design and Fameg demonstrate the designers’ commitment to innovation and craftsmanship, which Jen, Tim and Nic share.

Bentu (and subsidiary brand Buzao) is an experimental Chinese studio that has fast become known for its progressive approach to materials, design and sustainability. Sean Dix is an American designer based in Hong Kong who, as both a furniture maker and designer, has an innate understanding of materials, craftsmanship and functionality. Matt Cole and Dan Given of m.a.d Furniture Design are inspired by the early designs of the Bauhaus and work with an international team of like-minded designers to create modern, timeless pieces. Polsih brand, Fameg, has a remarkable history as one of the original factories founded by the Thonet family over 130 years ago. Fameg produces high-quality classic bentwood furniture as well as collaborating with current designers to create modern, contemporary collections.
