R L Foote Design Studio is the brainchild of Melbourne installation artist, designer and Chef Ryan L Foote. It is focused on creating contemporary ceramic flatware that reimagines how food is served with intriguing, beautiful and fun tableware. Accompanying these handcrafted ceramics are a series of stunning interior design objects.

Foote’s diverse background provides a unique source of knowledge and inspiration for the studio’s original ranges which are often inspired by his travels and cultural observations. At present Foote is based between Melbourne and Hong Kong.

Foote’s journey which began with studying Sculpture and Spatial Practice at the Victorian College of the Arts, to design sets for fashion shows across Australia to large installations and event based projects. As these careers collided, Foote’s art practice became more immersive, with elements of sound, lighting and fashion, and later on with food and drink elements. Pushing the experience even further, he started designing and making his own flatware to complement the events. That was the beginning of R L Foote Design Studio.

Foote works mainly with porcelain to achieve precise crisp sculptural forms and finishes. Currently there are a few unique ranges that were born from various inspiration sources.

The Bubble plates originally grew out of a project in Hong Kong happening for Mid-Autumn Festival where Foote was asked to create a series of plates and chocolate mooncakes inspired by the lunar surface. The bubble glaze led to this new range of plates, platters, bowls and vases.

Another range of tableware titled Diamond Lab features diamond drip infusers, dual-sided flippable bowls and plates, and large sculptural diamond platters. It was born out of Foote’s diamond inspired food-art-installation project which had the honour of being showcased at the National Gallery of Victoria surrounded by classical masterpieces.
