A clever mix of natural finishes – from Spotted Gum timber to marble-inspired quartz surfaces and polished concrete – unite to create a family-friendly kitchen hub that dispels the myth that hard surfaces can contribute to an austere environment.

This light-filled contemporary kitchen/dining space has used some traditionally brutalist materials to create a sense of warmth and character.

Hero of the space is the oversized island bench that highlights the beautiful, deeply mellow Spotted Gum cabinetry with an over-wrap of majestic marble-inspired Statuario Maximus by Caesarstone.
This quartz surface features large-scale deep grey veining against a soft white base – a striking focal point for the overall space – with the mitred edges ensuring perfect surface-to-edge pattern continuity.

Designed by Perth-based Studio Atelier, the choice of materials was driven by a need to connect with the outdoor courtyard but also to create a space that would provide longevity and durability to a growing family.

“Statuario Maximus created the perfect counter-balance between the Spotted Gum cabinetry and burnished concrete floor.  It melds the natural look of marble with the superior functional benefits of Caesarstone – it is scratch, heat, chip and stain resistant,” said Kimberley Tan, creative director, Studio Atelier.

The black accents of the steel stair balustrade and door and window frames are the final defining element of the design.
